[JAPAN's Health Industry] Feature: Healthy tea “Rooibos tea market is rapidly increasing” -Japan became world 2nd major importer

In the tea market, the demand for healthy tea associated with beauty, diet and lifestyle diseases is increasing and so are the sales. Herbal tea, a non-caffeinated alternative among users aged 20 to 40 female, has enjoyed steady sales levels for a while.

Recent market is indicating that rooibos tea consumption is rapidly increasing. According to point of sale (POS) grocery store data from October 2016 to September 2017, rooibos tea was ranked among the most popular comprising 21% of total sales.

Other tea consumption which ranks below that of rooibos tea was reported as; oolong tea at 16%, blend tea at 11%, Jasmine tea at 4%, Job’s tears tea at 8%, Buckwheat tea at 5%, Burdock tea at 6%, Black bean tea at 6%, Blend barley tea at 7%, Du Zhong tea at 2%, Houttuynia cordata(fish mint) tea at 2% and Pu’er tea at 1%, and others at 11%.

For an historical comparison, in 18-year-old research regarding the tea market conducted from October 2000- September 2001; oolong tea was ranked at the top at 42% and rooibos tea was ranked among the lowest at 4%. Since then, there has been a rapid increased and currently rooibos tea is ranked at the highest level pushing out rival oolong tea which has been a long-standing favourite. There has been an elongation rate up to 150% and it is still dramatically increasing.
