[JAPAN's Health Industry] Quasi-pharmaceutical Products Attract People for Wrinkle Improvement

POLA recently placed the label “wrinkle improvement” on their medical cosmetics and they were admitted in the market for the first time, last year in January, Shiseido in June and, Kose in autumn. Anti-wrinkle products are drawing public attention.

The anti-wrinkle market is gradually taking form

An “Anti-wrinkle effect” label has been added on cosmetic products in August 2011. Such products can indicate that they can “hide wrinkles on dry skin” and such labels have passed test evaluations, following guidelines from the Japanese Cosmetic Science Society. These are new efficacy authorisation labels for the past 10 years, and the number of anti-wrinkle products are increasing, such as the all-in-one gel from Kanebo, “series of Hadabisei” from Kulacie and cream serum from Yakult.

After that, major cosmetic companies such as Shiseido, Kose and Kao, and online shopping companies such as Yamada Bee Farm, ORBIS, DHC, Sylvan and Vernal started to use anti-wrinkle cosmetic products.

The first quasi-pharmaceutical products are drawing attention in the market again

Under such circumstances, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare admitted that products are for “wrinkle improvement” and are considered as quasi-pharmaceutical products. Again, the anti-wrinkle market is drawing much attention. In January last year, medical cosmetics by POLA admitted to display the “wrinkle improvement” label for the first time. This product has sold over 1.2 million items within a year. In June, Shiseido got an approval to label their products for “wrinkle improvement” active ingredients, and sold the new products. Also, the sales and demand for skin whitening products are rapidly increasing. In September, “wrinkle improvement” beauty cream products from Kose will be available in the market.

Prescription know-how accumulated within the industry

There are various causes for wrinkles, including insufficient moisture in the stratum corneum due to dryness and, fibre damage due to UV rays. For this reason, how the parts work on wrinkles depends on a product’s ingredients. Suitable ingredients and materials for anti-wrinkle cosmetics are formulated to include prescription know-hows within the industry. The number of suggestions in anti-wrinkle materials and prescriptions seems to be steadily increasing.
